Production, Production, Production, Manufacturing, Factory belts, Assembly lines, job work and and and. Most concepts of judging the performance of workers are based on the management practics of industrial work. Most managers learn in their business schools simple ideas about how to measure producivity of machines and factory work.

The western civilizations, especially the USA, are deeply influenced by the ideas of Calvinism and Puritanism, it is influenced by a work ethos that says work hard and think about that you will get the benefit into the future (heaven).  Most people and managers still believe that you have to work not only heard but also long to get more done.

The interesting thing is – that believe is wrong! Since more than 30 years people in the manufacturing industry know that the performance of assembly line workers goes down after the 6th working hour at a day.

And now – look into the creative industry: Most authors, most creative people work hard – for two or three hours and then they do nothing. Well – they polish a sentence here, or the write a letter or talk to a manager, but they do not work on their projects.

Software Development is not a task that is comparable with job work or assembly line work. It is a creative, collaborative undertaking of very high skilled people who do a very complex job. To hold the concentration for longer than 3 hours is inhuman and does not deliver good results.

Jeff Sutherland has did a very interesting article about the Maxwell curve of productivity of Software Development teams and Clinton Keith shows us a similar picture.

Both articles show that we do need to stop with the idea that Software Development Teams shall do overtime! It is clearly unproductive!

Work less equals to more productivity.
